How to fund payroll from your Relay account

NEW: Relay Payroll is available by invitation while it's in beta.

Relay Payroll draws each payroll straight from your Relay account. When you run payroll, Relay debits your account for net pay plus all payroll taxes, so keep enough available to cover the full amount by your funding deadline.

How does Relay fund your payroll?

When you run payroll, Relay debits your Relay account for the full cost of the run every worker's net pay plus all federal and state payroll taxes. The debit has to cover the entire amount; Relay can't send only part of a payroll.

How fast does direct deposit arrive?

Relay Payroll uses 1-day direct deposit by default for payrolls up to $25,000, so your team can get paid quickly. However, some customers may first need to process approximately two payrolls using a 4-day direct deposit timeline before becoming eligible for 1-day direct deposit. In other words, faster direct deposit may be something you earn as you establish your payroll history with Relay.

Your direct deposit speed determines your funding deadline: the faster the deposit speed, the closer to payday Relay will debit your account.

HEADS UP: Your funding deadline depends on your direct deposit speed. Have the money available in your Relay account and submit payroll by the cutoff a set number of business days before payday.

If something goes wrong

If a payroll debit can't be collected from your Relay account, you'll get a notification, and you may also get a request for more information. The debit can be tried again once the funds are available. To avoid this, keep enough in your Relay account to cover net pay plus all payroll taxes by your funding deadline.

If you submit payroll after the cutoff for your direct deposit speed, your team may be paid later than the scheduled payday. Run payroll ahead of your deadline to keep your team paid on time.

PRO TIP: Move or keep enough money in your Relay account a few days ahead of payday so every deposit is ready to go, and make sure there are no holds or freezes on your account before you run payroll.
