Payroll status and troubleshooting in Relay

NEW: Relay Payroll is available by invitation while it's in beta.

You can check whether a Relay Payroll run is processing, paid, or blocked in Relay. If a run is blocked, Relay shows the reason often missing tax details, an unsigned form, an open information request, or a short balance. Fix the flagged item, or contact our Customer Experience team.

How to check your payroll status

To check a payroll's status, open Relay and go to your payroll history, then find the run you want. Each run shows whether it's still processing, has paid your team, or is blocked and needs your attention.

Why a payroll can be blocked

A blocked payroll means one item needs finishing before Relay can run it. The most common blockers, and how to clear them:

  • Missing state tax info. Add your state's deposit schedule, unemployment (SUI) rate, and account numbers in your tax setup use your real account numbers, never placeholders.

  • A failed tax payment or filing. This one needs a closer look contact our Customer Experience team.

  • An open information request (RFI). After you set up your company, Relay reviews your account before you can run payroll. If we need more information, you'll see a request in Relay the in-app message reads "Payroll is blocked due to an open information request." Respond to the request in Relay, or contact our Customer Experience team if you think it's an error.

  • An unsigned signatory form. Have your signatory sign the outstanding forms. (Changing your signatory un-signs them and re-blocks payroll.)

  • A legal-name or FEIN mismatch with IRS records. Re-enter your exact registered legal business name and correct Federal EIN (FEIN) not your Social Security number.

  • Too low a Relay balance. Your account must cover net pay plus all payroll taxes by the funding deadline. If it's short, you'll get a notification, and Relay can retry the debit once funds are available so add funds and make sure there are no holds on your account.

FYI: Your Relay account funds payroll and is verified automatically, so there's no separate bank-verification step to clear.

Still stuck?

If you've cleared the flagged item and payroll is still blocked or the block points to something on your account we need to look into, like a failed tax payment our Customer Experience team can help.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my payroll went through?

Open your payroll history in Relay and check the run's status: a finished run shows your team as paid, a run that's still moving shows as processing, and a run that needs your attention shows as blocked, with the reason to fix.

Why is my payroll blocked?

A payroll is blocked when something must be finished before it can run commonly missing state tax info, an unsigned signatory form, an open information request, a legal-name or FEIN mismatch with the IRS, a failed tax payment, or too low a Relay balance. Relay flags the exact reason. Fix that item, or contact our Customer Experience team if it's something on your account we need to resolve.

What is an information request (RFI)?

After you set up your company, Relay reviews your account usually within about 2 business days before your first payroll can run. If we need more information to finish that review, you'll see a request for information in Relay. Respond to it there to clear the block; once your account is approved, you can run payroll. If you think the request is a mistake, contact our Customer Experience team.
