Relay does not support cryptocurrency transactions because Thread Bank, Member FDIC, prohibits crypto-related activity across debit card purchases, ACH transfers, and wire transfers.
What cryptocurrency transactions are blocked?
The restriction covers all cryptocurrency-related activity conducted through your Relay Account, including:
Debit card purchases from cryptocurrency exchanges or wallet services
ACH transfers to or from cryptocurrency exchanges or wallet services
Domestic and international wire transfers to or from cryptocurrency exchanges or wallet services
The restriction applies across every Relay subscription plan (Starter Plan, Grow Plan, and Scale Plan).
Why doesn't Relay support cryptocurrency?
Relay's banking partner, Thread Bank, Member FDIC, prohibits cryptocurrency activity under its internal compliance policies. Because Thread Bank issues Relay Accounts and cards, its compliance rules govern which transactions can be processed on the Relay Account.
What happens if I try to send money to a cryptocurrency exchange?
The transaction will not go through. Debit card purchases will decline at checkout, and ACH or wire transfers involving a cryptocurrency exchange or wallet service will be blocked before they settle.
Can I use cryptocurrency alongside my Relay Account?
No. Linking your Relay Account to a cryptocurrency exchange, custodian, or wallet service, or funding one through Relay, is not permitted. If your business involves cryptocurrency in any material way, contact our Customer Experience team so your case can be reviewed against Relay's eligibility rules.
