Accepted Documents for Your Social Security Number

UpdatedAugust 11, 2026

If Relay cannot automatically verify your Social Security Number, you can confirm it by uploading your Social Security card or one of three accepted alternatives: a W-2 form, a 1099 form, or a signed or filed tax return.

When does Relay need a Social Security Number document?

Relay only requests an SSN document if your Social Security Number cannot be automatically verified during account opening. If that happens, you will receive an email asking for a secure photo upload of your Social Security card.

What documents does Relay accept?

Relay accepts four documents for Social Security Number verification. Any one of the following is enough:

  • Social Security card (primary)

  • W-2 form

  • 1099 form

  • Signed or filed tax return

Each document must display your full Social Security Number to be accepted for verification by Thread Bank, Member FDIC.

How do I submit the document?

Upload the document through the secure link in the verification email Relay sends you. Do not send Social Security details over regular email, Slack, or any unencrypted channel. The secure upload keeps your information encrypted end to end.

What if I do not have any of these documents?

Reach out to Relay's Customer Experience team. They can walk you through the next steps for verifying your identity when the standard document list does not cover your situation.
