How to Create a New Relay Visa® Credit Card

UpdatedAugust 11, 2026

You can create up to five physical or virtual Relay Visa® Credit Cards per cardholder from the Relay web dashboard or mobile app, typically in under five minutes.

What you need before you start

  • An open Relay Visa® Credit Card account. If you haven't applied yet, see How to Apply for the Relay Visa® Credit Card.

  • Fewer than five existing cards on the cardholder you're creating for. The limit is five cards per cardholder, physical and virtual combined.

  • For physical cards: a US shipping address. Relay ships cards within the United States only.

  • For virtual shared cards: the team members you want to grant access to and a designated Receipt admin.

How do I create a new credit card on the web?

Create a new card from your Relay dashboard in 11 steps.

  5. Select the card type: Physical or Virtual.

Physical cards ship in 8-10 business days. Virtual cards are ready to use as soon as they're created.

How do I create a new credit card on the mobile app?

The mobile flow mirrors the web flow in 11 steps.

  1. Sign in to the Relay mobile app.

  2. Tap the Cards tab.

  3. Tap the green plus (+) icon in the top-right corner.

  4. Select Credit card.

  5. Select the card type: Physical or Virtual.

  6. Give the card a nickname for internal use.

  7. Select whether the card is Shared or Individual.

  8. Assign a primary cardholder.

  9. Select the source account for statement payment.

  11. Confirm the details and tap Create card.

What's the difference between a physical and a virtual Relay Visa® Credit Card?

A physical card is mailed to a US address and takes 8-10 business days to arrive. A virtual card is ready to use as soon as it's created and can be used online or added to a digital wallet. Virtual cards skip the shipping step and the name-on-card field entirely.

What's the difference between a shared and an individual card?

An individual card is tied to a single cardholder, and only that cardholder can view and use it. A shared card can be used by multiple team members you designate, with one Receipt admin responsible for uploading receipts. Both card types support the same spending controls.

How long does a physical Relay Visa® Credit Card take to arrive?

Physical Relay Visa® Credit Cards typically arrive within 8-10 business days of card creation. Cards ship to US addresses only.

Can I change spending controls or limits after the card is created?

Yes. Vendor controls, category controls, and transaction limits can be edited any time from the card's detail page in the dashboard or mobile app. For step-by-step instructions, see Editing your Relay Visa® Credit Card transaction limits.

What happens when a Relay Visa® Credit Card expires?

Physical Relay Visa® Credit Cards are automatically reissued about one month before the printed expiry date. A card printed with an expiry of 11/25 remains valid through the last day of November 2025. Virtual cards do not auto-reissue, so you'll create a replacement virtual card manually when the current one expires. Expiration notifications appear in-app rather than by email.

Are there fees for using a Relay Visa® Credit Card abroad?

A foreign exchange fee of 1% applies to any purchase made in a currency other than US dollars. The fee is applied automatically at settlement.

Common issues

  • You've hit the five-card limit. Freeze or terminate a card you no longer need, then create the new one. Each cardholder is capped at five cards, physical and virtual combined.

  • The name won't fit on the physical card. Names are limited to 21 characters. Shorten to a first initial plus last name if the full name exceeds the limit.

  • The shipping address field only shows US options. Relay ships cards within the United States only. Use a US business address, a US registered agent address, or a US-based location for the cardholder.

  • You can't find the source account option in the mobile flow. The source account is set at the credit account level rather than on the individual card. If it's missing, verify your credit account setup in Paying your Relay Visa® Credit Card balance.

  • The card doesn't appear after creation. Refresh the Cards tab or sign out and back in. Newly created virtual cards should appear right away; if not, contact the Customer Experience team.
