How to Organize Your Payees in Relay

You can organize payees in Relay by bookmarking key vendors, applying custom tags, sorting your payee list (including by "Last paid"), and filtering with one-click cards like "Bookmarked" and "Needs attention." You can also start a payment directly from the payee list, without opening the payee's details first.

What's new on the Payees page?

The Payees page now gives you more ways to find, organize, and pay your payees:

  • Pay from the list — Start a payment directly from a payee's row.

  • New sorting options — Including a "Last paid" option that surfaces payees you've paid most recently.

  • Tags — Create custom tags to categorize and group your payees.

  • Payee bookmarking — Bookmark key vendors, then filter to them in one click with the "Bookmarked" card.

  • "Needs Attention" card — Filter to payees missing payment information in one click.

  • Bulk Payee Imports — Drag and drop payee data to create multiple payees in seconds.

How do I pay a payee directly from the payee list?

You can start a payment from a payee's row in the list — you no longer need to open the payee's details first.

  1. Sign in to your Relay account.

  2. Go to the "Payments" tab, then select the "Payees" tab from the Payments dashboard.

  3. Find the payee you want to pay. You can search, sort, or use the filter cards to narrow the list.

  4. Select "Pay" on the payee's row and follow the payment flow.

For step-by-step instructions on each payment type, see How to Send an ACH From Your Relay Account.

How do I sort my payee list?

Use the Sort By dropdown on the Payees page to reorder your list. Options include:

  • "Nickname (A–Z)"

  • "Nickname (Z–A)"

  • "Last Paid" (puts most recently paid vendors at the top of your payee list)

  • "Last edited" (the default)

How do I bookmark a payee?

Bookmark the payees you pay most often so you can filter to them in one click. Note that any bookmarked payees are shared across all users on your Relay account.

  1. Sign in to your Relay account.

  2. Go to the "Payments" tab, then select the "Payees" tab from the Payments dashboard.

  3. Select the payee you want to bookmark to open their details panel.

  4. In the payee details panel, select the bookmark icon next to the payee's name.

  5. To see only your bookmarked payees, select the "Bookmarked" card on the Payees page.

TIP: Bookmark your recurring vendors — rent, software subscriptions, key suppliers — so paying them starts with one click instead of a search.

How do I find payees that are missing payment information?

Select the "Needs Attention" card on the Payees page. This filters your list to payees that are missing payment information, in one click.

From there, you can select "Edit" beside each payee to add the missing details yourself, or ask the payee to fill them in — see How to Request Payment Information From Payees in Relay.

How do I use smart tags?

Smart tags help you group and find payees. You can create a tag yourself or accept an AI suggestion based on the payee's default memo. Tags are never applied automatically. Your tag appears under the payee's nickname in the payee list.

Smart tags are available on every Relay plan to roles with write permission to manage payees.

  1. Sign in to your Relay account.

  2. Go to the "Payments" tab, then select the "Payees" tab from the Payments dashboard.

  3. Open the "Manage tags" card.

  4. Select "New tag" to create a tag and assign it to payees.

Each payee can have one tag. A tag name can contain up to 50 characters. You can assign one tag to several payees at once.

To change an existing tag:

  1. Open "Manage tags" and open the tag's "Edit tag" window.

  2. Update "Tag name" to rename the tag.

  3. Select untagged payees in "Assign payees" to add them. Payees that already have a tag aren't available in the assignment options.

  4. Select the remove icon next to an assigned payee to unassign it.

  5. Select "Save".

You can also delete a tag through "Manage tags". Deleting a tag leaves its payees untagged; it does not delete the payees.

To find tagged payees, open the tag filter and use its search field. Archived payees keep their tag; turn on the archived filter to see them.

FYI: Bulk payee upload does not apply tags to imported payees. You can assign a smart tag after the upload is complete.

HEADS UP: AI tag suggestions use the payee's default memo. You must accept a suggestion before Relay applies it. Each organization can make up to 50 AI suggestion requests per hour. This limits how often you request suggestions, not how many tags you can create.

How can I filter by payee tags?

Follow the below steps to filter your payee list by tags you have created:

  1. Sign in to your Relay account.

  2. Go to the "Payments" tab, then select the "Payees" tab from the Payments dashboard.

  3. Select the Filters button, then press Tags. Select tags you have created to filter in only payees assigned to these tags.

Things to Know

  • A payee's details panel shows three fields: "Last paid on" (date), "Last payment" (amount), and "Last used" (payment method).

  • The Payees list is paginated, not infinite-scroll. Use the "Results per page" control at the bottom of the list to change how many payees show at once.
