Check Deposit Compliance Requirements

UpdatedAugust 11, 2026

Relay verifies certain mobile check deposits to reduce fraud risk. If a deposit is flagged, you will be asked to provide one document that shows the check is connected to your business.

Why does Relay verify some check deposits?

Mobile check deposits carry a higher fraud risk than other deposit types, so Relay confirms the check you deposited was issued to your business by a legitimate party. Verification protects your Relay Account and helps Relay meet Thread Bank, Member FDIC compliance requirements.

What documents can I provide to verify a check deposit?

You can provide any one of the following options to complete verification:

  • Issuer's contact number. A phone number for the person or business that issued the check. Relay may contact the issuer to confirm the check is valid.

  • Signed invoice or contract. A signed document showing the goods or services the check is paying for. The signature on the invoice or contract should match the signature on the check.

  • Issuer communication. Screenshots of email or text messages showing the services rendered, with the issuer's contact information visible.

You only need to provide one option, not all three. Any single item above is sufficient.

Is my information kept private?

Yes. Any information you provide for check deposit verification is used only to verify the deposit and is not shared or distributed to any third party.

Can I cancel a check deposit while it is clearing?

No. Relay cannot cancel a check deposit once it is clearing. If you need to stop the payment, contact the check issuer directly and ask them to place a stop-payment on the check with their bank.

Does Relay verify every check deposit?

No. Verification is not ongoing. Relay verifies check deposits only until it has established a familiar pattern for your business, so new Relay Accounts and unusually large deposits are the most likely to be reviewed. Once your deposit history is consistent, verification requests become rare.
