Which Names Can I Receive ACH, Wire, or Check Payments Under?

UpdatedAugust 11, 2026

You can receive ACH, wire, and check payments under your registered business name, a listed Beneficial Owner's name, or an approved DBA. International wires are the one exception.

Which names can receive payments into your Relay account?

Relay accepts incoming payments made out to any of the following:

  • Your business name, as registered with Relay

  • A Beneficial Owner listed on your account

  • A DBA (Doing Business As) name, once it has been added to your Relay account

If a payment arrives made out to any other name, Thread Bank, Member FDIC (Relay's banking partner) may return it to the sender with the code UTLA (Unable to Locate Account).

Which payment types does this rule apply to?

The eligibility rule applies to every incoming payment type Relay supports:

  • ACH transfers

  • Domestic wires

  • Check deposits (mobile deposit and mailed checks)

  • International wires, with one added restriction covered in the next section

Which names can receive international wires?

International wires can only be received under your registered business name or a listed Beneficial Owner's name. DBA names are not eligible for international wires. If you want to receive an international payment, ask the sender to make the wire out to your business name or a Beneficial Owner instead.

What happens if a payment arrives under an ineligible name?

The payment is typically returned to the sender with the code UTLA (Unable to Locate Account). Thread Bank cannot deposit funds sent under a name that is not on your Relay account, even if the sender intended the payment for your business.

To recover the money, ask the sender to reissue the payment under one of your eligible names.

How do I add a DBA name to my Relay account?

You submit the DBA through your Relay account settings, and Relay's Compliance team reviews it before payments can be received under that name. Once approved, the DBA becomes eligible for ACH transfers, domestic wires, and check deposits. International wires remain limited to your business name or a Beneficial Owner.

For step-by-step instructions, see How to add a DBA name to your Relay account.

Can I deposit a check made out to someone else with Power of Attorney?

No. Relay cannot accept checks made out to a name that is not listed on the account, even with Power of Attorney documentation. The check must be reissued in the name of your business, a listed Beneficial Owner, or an approved DBA before Relay can deposit it.

Where do I find my eligible payment names?

Your business name and any approved DBAs are visible in your Relay account settings. Beneficial Owners are captured during account onboarding and can be confirmed with Relay's Customer Experience team.
