Connecting Relay to Gusto links your Relay checking account to Gusto payroll so payroll transactions in Relay show cycle detail and shortfall warnings arrive before payday.
What you need before you start
Administrator permission on your Relay account (or Super Administrator, if you're an advisor connecting on behalf of a client)
A Gusto account, or your business details ready if you plan to create one from inside Relay
Desktop access to Relay: this integration cannot be set up from the mobile app
About 5 minutes for initial setup
How do I connect Relay to an existing Gusto account?
Connect Relay to Gusto from Settings > Integrations on desktop in six steps.
Sign in to your Relay account on a desktop browser.
Go to the Settings tab.
Click Integrations.
Scroll to the Payroll section and click Connect beside the Gusto logo.
Click Login to Gusto and enter your Gusto credentials.
Authorize Relay's access to your Gusto account, then click Save.
If you administer more than one Gusto business, select every business you want to link during first-time setup. You can disconnect and reconnect later to add businesses you missed.
How do I create a new Gusto account from inside Relay?
You can spin up a new Gusto account from the same Integrations screen without leaving Relay.
Sign in to your Relay account on a desktop browser.
Go to the Settings tab.
Click Integrations.
Scroll to the Payroll section and click Connect beside the Gusto logo.
Click Create a Gusto Account.
Complete the signup form. Your Relay contact information pre-populates the fields Gusto asks for.
Follow Gusto's setup steps and set Relay as your payroll funding source.
Any promotional trial for new Gusto accounts is set by Gusto; check Gusto's signup screen for the current offer details.
What do Gusto transactions look like in Relay?
Gusto transactions appear in your checking account activity with the Gusto logo and a category tag that maps to what Gusto paid out.
To view them, go to the Accounts tab and open the checking account you set as the payroll funding source. Each Gusto transaction is tagged with one of four category codes:
NET: Direct deposits paid to salaried employees
REM: Reimbursements for employee business expenses
TAX: Tax payments sent to federal, state, and local agencies
CND: Direct deposit payments to contractors
With the integration turned on, each transaction also shows which payroll cycle it belongs to. For contractor payments, you'll see the contractor's name and the payment method Gusto used.
How do payroll shortfall warnings work?
A shortfall warning tells you 14 days before a scheduled Gusto payroll if Relay projects your checking account won't have enough money to cover the run.
Warnings arrive by email and in the app. Anyone with access to the checking account receives the in-app version; Administrators receive the email even if they aren't assigned to the account.
Relay projects the shortfall based on:
Your current account balance
Recent transaction patterns
Any scheduled outgoing payments
To see what Relay is projecting, click Review Projected Transactions inside the in-app warning. From there, you have three options to close the gap:
Cancel or reschedule an upcoming outgoing payment
Pull money in from a connected external account
Transfer money between your Relay accounts
To turn shortfall warnings off, go to Settings > Integrations > Gusto > Edit.
How do I import team members from Gusto into Relay?
Import team members from Gusto through the Team tab in Relay, one at a time or in bulk.
Sign in to your Relay account.
Go to the Team tab.
Click + Add new team member.
Under "Import from a third-party service," select Gusto.
Search by name or enter the team member's email.
Assign the permission level you want the invite to carry.
Click Invite.
The invitee gets a setup email. Once they sign in, they can access the accounts and cards their permission level allows.
If someone in your Gusto account already has a Relay profile that matches on name or email, click their contact to see the "Team Member Matches a Gusto Record" prompt, then click Link Gusto Record. From that point on, Relay updates their contact details automatically when the record changes in Gusto.
Common issues
Setup fails on mobile. The Gusto integration is desktop-only; sign in through a desktop browser and retry.
Gusto login step won't complete. Confirm you're using an Administrator (or Super Administrator) role on Relay, then retry from Settings > Integrations.
A Gusto business is missing from Relay. During first-time setup you must select every Gusto business you want linked; disconnect and reconnect to pull in any you missed.
No shortfall warning arrived before a run. Check that warnings are on under Settings > Integrations > Gusto > Edit, and that your email address in Relay is current.
Transactions show without payroll cycle detail. The integration may have disconnected; reconnect through Settings > Integrations > Gusto.
