Why Does Relay Need a Personal Address for Team Members With Transaction Permissions?

UpdatedAugust 11, 2026

Relay requires a personal home address from team members who can move money so Thread Bank, Member FDIC, can complete required compliance screening and keep account access secure.

Who needs to add a personal address?

Any team member with transaction-related permissions on a Relay account. That includes people who can send payments, approve bills, or access transaction features. Business owners who already provided a personal address at account setup do not need to add anything new.

Why does Relay require this?

Personal address verification is part of the compliance screening required for anyone who can move money through a Relay account. Thread Bank, Member FDIC, holds the banking charter, and federal rules require Relay to verify each authorized user's identity, including their home address, before that person can transact.

What counts as an acceptable personal address?

A residential home address only. Relay cannot accept:

  • P.O. boxes

  • Virtual addresses

  • Mail forwarding addresses

  • Registered agent addresses

  • Coworking or shared office addresses

If your residential address recently changed, use the current address where you actually live.

How do I add my personal address?

  1. Sign in to your Relay account.

  2. Select Add personal address when the prompt appears.

  3. Enter your residential home address, including unit or apartment number.

  4. Confirm and submit.

The prompt appears the next time you sign in after being invited to a role with transaction permissions. You will not see it if you already have an address on file.

When is the deadline?

August 31. Team members who have not added a personal address by that date will see their individual transaction access limited starting September 1.

What happens if I miss the deadline?

Your individual access to transaction features is limited on September 1. The account itself stays open and active for other team members. Full access is restored once you add your personal address, so the fix is quick even after the deadline passes.

Do business owners need to add an address?

No. Owners submitted a personal address during business account setup, so no additional prompt appears for them. Only team members added later with transaction permissions receive the request.

Common issues

  • The prompt is not showing up: Sign out of Relay and sign back in. The prompt appears on next sign-in after transaction permissions are granted.

  • The address is being rejected: Confirm the address is residential. P.O. boxes, mail-forwarding services, virtual addresses, coworking spaces, and business locations are not accepted.

  • You entered the wrong address: Contact the Customer Experience team to update it. Do not re-submit through the prompt if it no longer appears.

  • You share a home with another team member: That is fine. Two team members can use the same residential address.

Frequently asked questions

Is this because Relay is reviewing my account?

No. This is routine compliance screening triggered by transaction permissions. It is not tied to any specific transaction, alert, or account review.

Does adding my address make me personally liable for the business?

No. Providing a personal address for compliance screening does not create personal liability for the business or its debts. The address is used only to verify your identity as an authorized user on the account.

Will this address show on the business account?

No. Personal addresses are stored separately for compliance purposes and are not displayed as the business address on statements, invoices, or shared account views.

What if my access gets limited on September 1?

Adding your personal address restores full access. The rest of the account continues to function normally for other team members while yours is limited, so business operations are not paused for the whole team.
