How to Add Money From an External Bank Account to Relay

UpdatedAugust 11, 2026

Once you have linked an external bank account, you can pull money into any Relay checking account through the web dashboard or the Relay mobile app.

What you need before you start

  • A Relay account with at least one checking account.

  • An external bank account already linked to Relay (see Connecting a bank account if you have not linked one yet).

  • Enough available balance in the external account to cover the transfer amount.

How do I add money from an external bank account on the web?

Use the Add money button in the top-right of the Home or Accounts tab, then select From external account.

  1. Sign in to your Relay account on the web.

  2. Go to the Home or Accounts tab.

  3. Click Add money in the top-right corner, then select From external account.

  4. Choose your linked external account from the funding dropdown.

  5. Select the Relay checking account that will receive the transfer.

  6. Enter the transfer amount and click Next.

  7. Review the details and click Done to submit the transfer.

How do I add money from an external bank account in the Relay mobile app?

Tap Add money on the Home tab, choose the destination Relay checking account, then pick the external account as the funding source.

  1. Sign in to the Relay mobile app.

  2. Tap Add money on the Home tab.

  3. Choose the Relay checking account that will receive the transfer.

  4. Enter the transfer amount and tap Next.

  5. Select your linked external bank account as the funding source.

  6. Review the details and tap Confirm to submit the transfer.

How long do external bank transfers into Relay take?

Most external transfers arrive in 1 to 3 business days, and in some cases can take up to 5 business days to fully settle. Weekends and federal holidays extend the timeline.

Are there fees for adding money from an external bank account?

There is no per-transfer charge from Relay for pulling money in from a linked external bank account. Your external bank may apply its own outbound ACH fee, so check with them if you are unsure.

What are the transfer limits?

  • The transfer amount cannot exceed the available balance shown in the transfer flow.

  • The displayed available balance updates approximately every 24 hours, so it may lag behind the live balance at your external bank.

  • Daily and monthly transfer limits apply and vary by plan. See Viewing your account limits for the specifics on your account.

Which Relay account can receive the deposit?

Only Relay checking accounts can be the direct destination for an external bank transfer. Savings accounts cannot receive external deposits directly. If you want the money to land in savings, deposit it into a checking account first, then move it internally to your Relay savings account.

Common issues

  • Available balance looks wrong. The balance in the transfer flow refreshes about every 24 hours; if you recently received a deposit at your external bank, it may not be reflected yet. Try again in a few hours.

  • Transfer is still pending after 3 business days. ACH transfers occasionally take up to 5 business days to settle. Contact our Customer Experience team if the money has not arrived by end of day 5.

  • External account is not in the dropdown. The linked bank connection may have expired or been removed. Reconnect it, then start the transfer again.

  • Savings account is not available as a destination. Only checking accounts can receive external deposits. Deposit into checking, then transfer to savings from inside Relay.
