How to Edit Checking or Savings Account Nicknames in Relay

UpdatedAugust 11, 2026

You can rename any Relay checking or savings account from the web or the Relay mobile app in under two minutes, as long as you have edit permissions.

What you need before you start

  • An active Relay account with sign-in access

  • Administrator permissions on the business (Read-Only users can view accounts but can't edit nicknames)

  • The account you want to rename already opened in Relay

  • If your books are connected to Xero or QuickBooks, plan to update the nickname in that tool afterward (Relay nicknames don't sync automatically after the first connection)

How do I edit an account nickname on the web?

Sign in at app.relayfi.com, open the account, and use the three-dot menu to rename it. The full steps:

  1. Sign in to your Relay account.

  2. Click the Accounts tab in the left navigation.

  3. Click the checking or savings account you want to rename.

  4. Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of the account view.

  5. Click Edit.

  6. Update the account nickname, adjust team member access if you want, and save.

The new nickname appears everywhere the account is referenced, including transfer flows, statements, and the payee list.

How do I edit an account nickname in the Relay mobile app?

The mobile flow follows the same pattern, using the Edit account name option in the three-dot menu:

  1. Sign in to the Relay mobile app.

  2. Tap the Accounts tab.

  3. Tap the checking or savings account you want to rename.

  4. Tap the three vertical dots in the top-right corner.

  5. Tap Edit account name.

  6. Enter the new nickname and save.

How many accounts can I name?

Most Relay businesses can open up to 20 checking accounts, plus additional savings accounts. Entity type sets the ceiling:

  • LLCs, General Partnerships, and Corporations: up to 20 checking accounts

  • Sole proprietorships: up to 10 checking accounts

Nicknames make multi-account setups readable. If you're running Profit First or any envelope-style budgeting method, name each account for its purpose (for example, "Operating," "Owner's Pay," "Tax," "Profit").

Who on my team can edit nicknames?

Only team members with Administrator permissions can edit checking or savings account nicknames. Read-Only team members can view balances and transactions on an account they have access to, but they can't rename it. If someone on your team needs to make the change and doesn't have the right role, an Administrator can update their permission level from the Team settings.

What happens to my Xero or QuickBooks connection after I rename an account?

The nickname change stays in Relay unless you update the connected account name in Xero or QuickBooks manually. Account nicknames don't automatically sync to your accounting software after the initial connection. To keep your books tidy, open the connected account inside Xero or QuickBooks and rename it there too.

Common issues

  • The Edit option is greyed out. You're likely signed in as a Read-Only team member. Ask an Administrator to update your permission level or make the change themselves.

  • The new nickname isn't showing up in Xero or QuickBooks. Account nicknames don't sync after the first connection. Rename the account inside Xero or QuickBooks directly.

  • I can't find the three-dot menu. Make sure you've clicked into the specific account view first. The menu appears in the top-right corner of that account's page, not on the Accounts list view.

  • My saved payees still show the old nickname. Payee entries are separate from account nicknames. If a payee needs a new label, edit the payee record directly.
