You can add up to 20 checking accounts and 2 savings accounts on Relay, rename any account, and control which team members see it, all from the Accounts tab.
What you need before you start
A signed-in Relay account on desktop at app.relayfi.com or the Relay mobile app
Administrator permissions on the Relay account (Read-Only users cannot add or rename accounts)
A short nickname in mind that describes what the account is for
How many checking and savings accounts can I have on Relay?
The number of accounts you can open depends on your Relay Subscription Plan and business entity type. The current limits are:
Starter Plan and Grow Plan: up to 20 checking accounts (10 checking accounts for Sole Proprietorships)
Scale Plan: up to 50 checking accounts
All plans: up to 2 savings accounts
When your Relay Account is approved, one Business Checking account and one Business Savings account are created automatically. Both can be renamed at any time.
How do I add a new checking or savings account on desktop?
You add accounts from the Accounts tab in the Relay desktop dashboard. The full flow is six steps:
Sign in to your Relay account on desktop at app.relayfi.com.
Open the Accounts tab from the left-hand navigation.
Click Add Account at the top of the accounts list.
Enter a nickname (for example, Payroll, Tax Reserve, or Profit) and select checking or savings.
Assign which team members can see and transact from the account.
Click Confirm to create the account.
The new account appears immediately in your Accounts list and is ready to use.
How do I add a new checking or savings account in the Relay mobile app?
You add accounts from the Accounts tab in the Relay mobile app using the plus button. The flow mirrors desktop:
Open the Relay mobile app and tap the Accounts tab.
Tap the + button in the top-right corner.
Enter a nickname and select checking or savings.
Assign team member access.
Tap Confirm to create the account.
How do I rename a checking or savings account?
You rename an account from the three-dot menu on the account's detail page. On desktop:
Open the Accounts tab and select the account you want to rename.
Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner of the account detail view.
Select Edit.
Update the nickname and save.
In the Relay mobile app:
Tap the account you want to rename.
Tap the three-dot menu.
Tap Edit account name.
Enter the new nickname and save.
The new nickname takes effect immediately across desktop and mobile.
Can I change an existing account from checking to savings, or the other way around?
Account type is set at creation and cannot be changed later. If you need to switch, create a new account with the correct type, move the balance across using an internal transfer, then close the original account.
Who can see the new account I created?
Only team members you assigned during account creation can see and transact from the new account. Two permission layers control visibility together:
User role (Read-Only or Administrator) defines what actions a team member can take across the Relay Account
Account-level access defines which specific accounts each team member can view
You can update account-level access anytime from the account's Edit menu.
What happens to my Xero or QuickBooks integration when I rename an account?
Renaming an account in Relay does not automatically rename the matching account in Xero or QuickBooks. Update the account name inside your accounting software separately to keep the two systems aligned.
Common issues
The Add Account button is greyed out or missing. You have likely hit your plan's checking or savings limit, or you are signed in with a Read-Only role. Check your current account count against your plan limits above, or ask an Administrator on your account to add the new account for you.
The savings account option is not available. You already have 2 savings accounts, which is the maximum on every Relay Subscription Plan. Close an existing savings account or reuse one before adding a new one.
The nickname is not saving. Nicknames must be under 30 characters and cannot include emojis or special symbols. Try a shorter, plain-text name.
A renamed account still shows the old name in Xero or QuickBooks. The rename does not sync to connected accounting software. Update the account name inside Xero or QuickBooks separately.
