How Relay Card Limits Work

UpdatedAugust 11, 2026

Every Relay debit and credit card has daily and monthly transaction limits set at card creation. Default limits apply if you skip setting custom ones.

Who this is for

  • Relay account holders using the Relay Visa® Debit Card or the Relay Visa® Credit Card

  • Owners setting up a new card and choosing between custom and default limits

  • Team members with card access whose spending needs to be capped

  • Anyone whose card was declined for exceeding a daily or monthly limit

How Relay card limits work

  • Every card has a daily and a monthly limit that governs how much can move through it

  • Limits are set at card creation, either as custom values you choose or as Relay's defaults if you skip that step

  • Limits apply to all card-based activity, including purchases, ATM withdrawals, cash deposits, and incoming card transactions like merchant refunds

  • ATM withdrawals must be separately enabled on a physical debit card before they will process

  • All card limits reset daily at 12:00 AM Eastern Time

What are Relay's default card limits?

Cards created without custom limits use Relay's default daily and monthly transaction limits. To see the exact defaults on your card, open the Transaction Limits page inside your Relay account. Opting out of setting custom limits does not mean the card is unlimited; the defaults still apply.

How do I set custom limits when creating a Relay card?

You can set daily and monthly spending limits at the moment you create a Relay Visa® Debit Card or Relay Visa® Credit Card. If you skip this step, Relay's defaults apply automatically. You can edit the limits later from the card's spending limits page.

How do I change limits on an existing card?

  1. Log in to your Relay account and open the Cards tab.

  2. Select the card you want to edit.

  3. Choose Spending limits.

  4. Enter new daily and monthly amounts, then save.

The new limits take effect immediately for future transactions.

Do ATM withdrawals count toward my Relay card limits?

Yes. ATM withdrawals and cash deposits both count toward your physical debit card's transaction limits. ATM access is off by default on new physical debit cards, so you need to enable it and set separate ATM limits before the card can be used at an ATM.

To enable ATM withdrawals on a physical Relay Visa® Debit Card:

  1. Go to Cards and select the card.

  2. Choose Spending limits.

  3. Toggle Allow ATM withdrawals on.

  4. Set your daily and monthly ATM limits, then save.

When do Relay card limits reset?

Relay card limits reset every day at 12:00 AM Eastern Time. A transaction that would push you past the daily limit before that reset will decline. Wait until after 12:00 AM ET to retry, or request a limit increase if you regularly hit the ceiling.

What should I do if my card was declined for exceeding its limits?

Check your card's daily and monthly limits under the Cards tab in Relay. If the limit field shows "None," Relay's default limits are in effect for that card. If the defaults do not cover your business's spending, submit a transaction limit increase request from the Transaction Limits page.

Common issues:

  • Card declined at checkout with a healthy account balance → daily or monthly card limit already reached

  • Limit field shows "None" → default limits are active, not unlimited spending

  • ATM withdrawal declined → ATM withdrawals not enabled on the card, or ATM daily limit already reached

  • Purchase declined right after midnight → limit reset is midnight Eastern Time, so time zones west of ET reset later than local midnight

What is not covered by card limits

Card transaction limits govern card-based activity only. Outgoing ACH transfers, wires, and checks sent from your Relay account have separate transaction limits at the account level, viewable on the Transaction Limits page. Card limits and account-level limits are managed independently.
