How to Update Your Mobile Phone Number for 2FA

UpdatedAugust 11, 2026

Update the mobile phone number Relay uses for two-factor authentication (2FA) from your account settings on the web or in the Relay mobile app. You verify the old number as part of the change.

What you need before you start

  • Access to your current Relay login (email and password)

  • Access to the mobile phone number currently on file, so you can receive the verification code

  • The new mobile phone number you want to use for 2FA going forward

If you no longer have access to your old phone number, skip to What if I've lost access to my old phone number? below.

Why does Relay ask me to verify the old number?

Verifying the old number confirms the request is coming from the person who controls the account today, not someone who has gained access to your email or password. It is a standard security step and applies to every phone number update.

What if I've lost access to my old phone number?

Call the Relay Customer Experience team at 1-(888) 205-9304, Monday to Friday, 9am to 8pm EST. Phone number changes cannot be completed by email for security reasons, so a live call is the fastest path when you cannot receive an SMS at the old number.

Common issues and fixes

  • You do not receive the SMS code on your old number. Check signal, allow a few minutes for delivery, and confirm the number on file matches the device you are holding. If the code still does not arrive, call Customer Experience at 1-(888) 205-9304.

  • You entered the new number but 2FA still routes to the old one. Sign out and sign back in. The change takes effect on the next sign-in.

  • You want to move off SMS 2FA entirely. Set up an authenticator app instead; see the related article on switching to app-based 2FA.
