How to Update Your Business Name on Relay

UpdatedAugust 11, 2026

To update your business name on Relay, send proof of the name change from your Secretary of State to the Customer Experience team, along with your current name on file.

What you need before you start

  • Proof of your business name change from your state's Secretary of State (an amended articles of incorporation, a certificate of amendment, or an equivalent state-issued document)

  • Your current business name as it appears on your Relay Account

  • Your new legal business name, matching the state filing exactly

What documents does Relay accept as proof of a business name change?

Relay accepts official documentation issued by your state's Secretary of State confirming the legal name change. Common examples include an amended articles of incorporation, a certificate of amendment, or a state-issued name change certificate. The document must show both the old and new business names or clearly reference the entity's original filing.

If you're not sure whether your document qualifies, ask the Customer Experience team before sending, so you don't have to re-submit.

How do I send my business name change documents to Relay?

Send your documentation to Relay's Customer Experience team through in-app chat or by email. The team processes the update once they receive the proof of change and both business names on file.

Follow these steps:

  1. Obtain the official proof of business name change from your Secretary of State.

  2. Open in-app chat from your Relay Account, or send an email to Relay's Customer Experience team.

  3. Attach the Secretary of State documentation to your message.

  4. Include your current business name (as it appears on your Relay Account today) and your new legal business name (matching the state filing exactly).

  5. Wait for confirmation from the Customer Experience team that the update is complete.

What happens after I send my documents?

The Customer Experience team reviews the documentation, verifies the name change matches your Relay Account records, and updates the business name on file. You'll receive a confirmation message once the update is complete. Timing depends on document completeness and review volume; if the team needs anything additional, they'll reach out directly.

Your Relay Account number, routing number, and existing account structure stay the same. Only the business name displayed on your account and statements changes.

What if I just want to add a DBA (Doing Business As) name?

If your official legal business name has not changed and you only want to add a Doing Business As (DBA) name to your account, follow the How to add a DBA name to your Relay account guide instead. Adding a DBA has different documentation requirements and does not replace your registered legal name.

Common issues

  • Document does not name the business: Return to the Secretary of State to request a certified copy that clearly references both the original and updated business names.

  • New name on the document does not match what you sent Relay: Reply to the Customer Experience team with the exact legal name as filed with the state, character-for-character.

  • You changed your entity type, not just the name: Entity type changes (for example LLC to corporation) may require re-verification of the business. Contact the Customer Experience team so they can walk you through the correct path.

  • You cannot locate proof from your Secretary of State: Use the Secretary of State business entity search to find your state's records portal and request a certified copy.
