You can change your Relay Visa® Credit Card primary or backup payment account from the Accounts tab in your Relay dashboard or mobile app in about a minute.
What you need before you start
Access to your Relay account (web or mobile app)
At least one Relay checking account (required for the primary payment account)
Optionally, a second Relay checking or savings account to use as the backup
What are the primary and backup payment accounts?
The primary payment account is the Relay checking account Relay pulls your credit card payment from first at the end of each 30-day billing cycle. The backup payment account is a second Relay account (checking or savings) that covers the remaining balance if the primary account has insufficient funds.
You choose both accounts during the Relay Visa® Credit Card application, and either can be changed later. Your primary payment account is also where your cash back is deposited once you meet the minimum spending requirement.
A backup payment account is optional, but recommended. If the primary account is short and no backup is set, the auto-payment can fail, which can trigger late fees and penalties.
How do I change my payment accounts on the web?
Follow these steps from the Relay web dashboard:
Sign in to your Relay account.
Go to the Accounts tab.
Open your credit account.
Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of your screen.
Click Manage auto-payment.
Select your new primary or backup account from the drop-down menu.
Click Save.
The change takes effect immediately and applies to your next scheduled auto-payment.
How do I change my payment accounts in the mobile app?
The steps in the Relay mobile app mirror the web:
Sign in to the Relay app on your mobile device.
Tap the Accounts tab.
Open your credit account.
Tap the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of your screen.
Tap Manage auto-payment.
Select your new primary or backup account from the drop-down menu.
Tap Save.
Can I use a linked external bank account as my primary or backup?
No. Both the primary and backup payment accounts for the Relay Visa® Credit Card must be Relay accounts. Linked external accounts are not eligible for auto-payment on your credit card.
Can I pay my balance early from a different account?
Yes. Early payments on your Relay Visa® Credit Card can come from any Relay account or a linked external account, even if that account is not your current primary or backup. Payments from a linked external account typically take up to 3 business days to complete.
Common issues
No Relay checking account appears in the drop-down. The primary payment account must be a Relay checking account. If only savings accounts appear, open or fund a Relay checking account first.
The backup account drop-down is empty. You need at least one additional Relay checking or savings account to select as a backup. Add a second account under the Accounts tab, then return to Manage auto-payment.
Auto-payment failed after the change. See What to do if your Relay Visa® Credit Card auto-payment fails for the next steps.
