You can pay off an external credit card by giving the card provider your Relay account and routing numbers, then letting them pull the payment as an ACH debit each due date.
What you need before you start
Your Relay checking account number
Your Relay routing number
Login access to your external credit card provider's website or app
Enough cash in the Relay account you plan to use, ideally at least one business day before the payment date
How does paying off an external credit card work with Relay?
Relay does not currently link to external credit cards inside the app, so payoff runs through your card provider as an ACH pull. You give the provider your Relay checking account and routing numbers, and they debit your Relay account on the payment date you set.
How do I find my Relay account and routing numbers?
Open the checking account you want to pay from in Relay, then look under Account details for the account number and routing number. For a full walkthrough, see Viewing your account and routing numbers.
How do I set up autopay on my external credit card?
Log in to your external credit card provider's website or app.
Open the autopay, scheduled payments, or payment methods settings.
Add a new payment method and select the "checking account" or "bank account" option.
Enter your Relay routing number and Relay checking account number.
Choose the payment amount (statement balance, minimum, or a fixed amount) and the payment date.
Save. Your provider will pull the payment on the scheduled date each cycle.
If your provider asks for a bank name, use Thread Bank, Member FDIC. The routing number you enter identifies the account.
How do I make sure the payment clears?
Keep enough cash in the Relay account to cover the pull before the payment date. You can top up a few ways:
Move money between your Relay checking or savings accounts. See Internal Account transfers.
Pull cash in from an external bank. See Adding funds from an external bank account.
Deposit a check from the mobile app. See How to Deposit a Check Using the Relay Mobile App.
ACH debits typically settle within one to three business days from the pull date, so plan your top-ups accordingly.
Common issues
Auto-payment failed for insufficient funds. Contact your credit card provider to re-initiate the payment. Providers do not automatically retry a failed ACH pull, so the missed payment stays unpaid until you or the provider triggers it again.
Provider rejects the account details. Double-check the routing number belongs to Thread Bank and the account number matches the checking account you selected in Relay. A digit off by one will fail validation.
You want to stop a provider from debiting your account. You can block an ACH puller directly in Relay. See Blocking merchants from directly debiting your account via ACH Pull.
Payment shows as pending longer than expected. ACH pulls can hold in pending for one to three business days. If the transaction is still pending after three business days, contact your card provider for the ACH trace.
