How to Enable and Manage Invoice Payment Reminders in Relay

UpdatedAugust 11, 2026

Payment reminders in Relay Invoices send your clients automated emails before and after the due date, so you spend less time chasing unpaid invoices.

What you need before you start

  • A Relay Account with Invoices enabled on your subscription plan

  • A drafted or existing invoice with a valid client email address

  • A due date set on the invoice (reminders will not send without one)

  • Your business logo and contact details configured in Invoice Settings (optional but recommended so reminders match your branding)

How do I turn on payment reminders for an invoice?

Payment reminders are configured on each invoice individually while you create or edit it.

  1. Go to Invoices > Create An Invoice in your Relay dashboard

  2. Open a drafted invoice or start a new one

  3. Add the client, line items, and a due date

  4. Near the final step of the invoice, toggle Payment Reminders on

  5. Send the invoice to your client

Reminders will begin sending automatically according to the fixed schedule below. The toggle stays on for the life of that invoice unless you turn it off.

When do reminder emails go out?

Relay sends reminder emails on a fixed schedule tied to the invoice due date:

  • 7 days before the due date

  • 3 days before the due date

  • On the due date

  • Every day after the due date, until the invoice is paid or canceled

Reminders only send while the invoice status is Unpaid or Overdue. As soon as the client pays, all further reminders stop automatically.

What is in each reminder email?

Every reminder email contains a short invoice summary, a secure payment link, and your business branding.

Specifically, each email includes:

  • A summary of the invoice, including amount, invoice number, and due date

  • A secure link for your client to view and pay the invoice

  • Your business name, logo, and contact information

Reminders send from Relay's servers but display your business branding to the client, matching the details you have set in Invoice Settings.

How do I stop reminders on a specific invoice?

Open the invoice from the Invoices tab and toggle Payment Reminders off, or mark the invoice as paid or canceled.

Any of the following will stop reminders on that invoice immediately:

  • Toggling Payment Reminders off inside the invoice

  • The client paying the invoice in full through the payment link

  • You marking the invoice as paid manually

  • You canceling the invoice

Reminders are per-invoice, so turning them off on one invoice does not affect any other invoice you have already sent.

Common issues

  • Reminders never sent. The invoice is likely missing a due date or a valid client email. Open the invoice and confirm both fields are filled in.

  • Client says they never received a reminder. Ask them to check their spam or promotions folder, then verify the client email address on the invoice is correct.

  • Reminders keep sending after the client paid outside Relay. Mark the invoice as paid manually to stop the reminder loop.

  • The reminder schedule looks off. The schedule is anchored to the current due date. If you edit the due date after sending, upcoming reminders shift with the new date.

  • The reminder shows Relay branding instead of your business. Update your business logo and contact details in Invoice Settings, then send future invoices from that saved profile.
