What Your Client Sees When Viewing and Paying a Relay Invoice

UpdatedAugust 11, 2026

When you send a Relay invoice, your client gets an email with a secure link to a hosted payment page where they view the details and pay. No account required.

Who this is for

  • Owners sending invoices through Relay Invoices for the first time

  • Anyone deciding whether to send a client an invoice or a Quick Request

  • Owners who want to see the client-side experience before their first send

How does my client receive the invoice?

Your client gets an email from Relay with the invoice summary and a secure "View and Pay Invoice" button.

The email contains:

  • A subject line: "Invoice from [Your Business Name or DBA]"

  • A summary of the invoice amount and due date

  • Your business logo, if you have added one

  • A "View and Pay Invoice" button that opens the secure payment page

You can also copy the payment link and send it through your own channels (email, text, or a messaging app) instead of relying on the Relay-sent email.

What does my client see on the payment page?

The client sees a secure Relay-hosted page showing your invoice details and the available payment options.

The page displays:

  • Your business name (or DBA) and logo

  • Invoice issue date, due date, and invoice number

  • A detailed list of line items, taxes, discounts, and totals

  • Any memo you included on the invoice

  • Downloadable attachments, if you uploaded files

  • Available payment methods

At the bottom of the page, the client picks a payment method and completes payment without leaving the page.

What payment methods can my client use?

Clients can pay by card, digital wallet, bank connection, or manual bank transfer.

The available options are:

  • Credit or debit card

  • Apple Pay or Google Pay, where supported

  • Pay by bank (ACH debit connected securely through Plaid)

  • ACH or wire transfer (a manual push from the client's own bank)

Available methods can vary by invoice settings and by the client's device. See Invoice Payment Fees and Plan Comparison in Relay for the fees tied to each method.

How does my client pay the invoice?

The client picks a payment method, enters payment details, and submits. You get a notification in Relay as soon as the payment goes through.

  1. Choose a payment method. The client selects card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, Pay by bank, or a manual ACH or wire transfer.

  2. Enter payment details. Depending on the method, the client enters card info, connects their bank securely through Plaid, or follows on-screen instructions to initiate a manual transfer.

  3. Submit the payment. The client sees an on-screen confirmation once the payment is submitted, and you get a notification inside Relay.

Do my clients need a Relay account to pay?

No. Your clients do not need a Relay account to view or pay an invoice.

The payment page is public through the secure link you send, and clients complete payment directly on the Relay-hosted page. That means anyone you invoice can pay, whether or not they use Relay themselves.

What happens after my client pays?

The invoice status moves to "Processing" once payment is submitted and updates to "Paid" once the payment settles into your Relay account.

  • Processing: payment submitted, waiting to settle

  • Paid: payment has cleared into your Relay account

  • Where to track it: the Invoices tab under Get Paid

Settlement timing varies by payment method. Card and digital wallet payments settle on a different clock than ACH or wire.
