How to Use Relay's Setup Checklist

UpdatedAugust 11, 2026

Relay's setup checklist guides admins and super-admins through the account-setup tasks that unlock day-to-day banking, from funding your Relay account to inviting your team.

Who is the setup checklist for?

The checklist is available to two role types on any Relay account:

  • Admins: team members with full access to manage accounts, cards, users, and settings.

  • Super-admins: the account owner, with the highest level of permissions.

Standard team members and advisors do not see the setup checklist on their dashboard.

How does the setup checklist work?

The checklist lives on your Relay dashboard and updates automatically as you complete or dismiss each task. Here's what to expect as you move through it:

  • Each task appears as a card with an action button that takes you straight to the relevant screen.

  • Most cards include a dismiss ("X") icon so you can hide tasks you don't need.

  • Required cards, like "Fund your account," cannot be dismissed.

  • Completed cards disappear and the next task moves up into view.

  • A progress bar fills in as you complete or dismiss each step.

  • The checklist header collapses if you want to hide it while you work.

  • When you finish every task, a confetti animation plays to mark setup complete.

What tasks are on the setup checklist?

The checklist covers ten setup actions. You can complete them in any order, though the default sequence is the path most customers move through when onboarding.

  1. Fund your account. Move money into your Relay account so you can start using it for banking, transfers, and cards. This step is required.

  2. Add multiple accounts. Open up to 20 checking and savings accounts under your business to organize cash flow by category, project, or Profit First allocation.

  3. Add a debit card. Order a physical or virtual Relay Visa® Debit Card to test card issuing, spend controls, and category tracking.

  4. Make a payment. Send an ACH, wire, or check payment through bill pay to see how outgoing payments flow.

  5. Set up automated transfers. Create rules that move money between accounts on a schedule or by percentage. This is how most owners automate tax savings and Profit First allocations.

  6. Connect bookkeeping tools. Sync Relay with QuickBooks Online, Xero, Gusto, or another connected app so transactions flow into your books automatically.

  7. Add users to Relay. Invite team members, bookkeepers, or advisors with role-based permissions so the right people see the right things.

  8. Request a payment. Send clients a secure link to pay you by bank transfer.

  9. Add a credit card. Apply for the Relay Visa® Credit Card for flexible purchasing and detailed spend tracking.

  10. Set up direct deposit. Give your Relay account and routing numbers to a payroll provider or client so payments land directly in your account.

Which tasks are required, and which can I dismiss?

Only "Fund your account" is a required task; every other card can be dismissed with the "X" icon if it does not apply to how you plan to use Relay. Dismissing a card removes it from the checklist and advances the progress bar, but the underlying feature stays available from your dashboard whenever you need it.

Can I complete a task after I've dismissed it?

Yes. Dismissing a card only hides it from the checklist; the underlying action stays available. You can still order a debit card, connect QuickBooks, invite a team member, or complete any other dismissed task from your Relay dashboard at any time, and your setup progress saves normally.

Can I restart the setup checklist?

The setup checklist cannot currently be restarted once it has been dismissed or completed. If you're onboarding a new team member and want to walk them through specific setup tasks, share direct links to each feature from your dashboard.

What happens if I complete tasks out of order?

Completing tasks out of order works, but the default sequence reflects the path most customers take through setup. Following the recommended order gets you to a fully working Relay account in the fewest steps.
